This page is in development.

We will be listing the locations in our community that need volunteers year-round or seasonally.

If you would like your volunteer opportunity to be considered, please email the church at:

WindowDressers Insulating Window Inserts let in light while stopping drafts. Each insert is made of a custom-made pine frame wrapped on each side with tightly-sealed, clear polyolefin film, creating an airspace between the two layers for additional insulation. The insert is finished with a compressible foam gasket. The foam allows enough give for the inserts to be easily slid into place in the fall and removed in the spring, while holding firmly enough to provide a tight, friction-based seal. The inserts are installed inside of your existing window frame with no fasteners required.

The inserts are free for those who cannot afford to pay, and low cost for middle and high income households. We keep our insert-prices exceptionally low (50%-75% cheaper than commercial products) through our non-profit model of cooperative insert-building. This means that customers contribute time at our local Community Builds. Please visit our Volunteer page to learn more about our participatory model.

Traditionally, the Bar Harbor Congregational Church manages the island-wide Thanksgiving Basket Drive in coordination with the Bar Harbor and Westside Food Pantries. This effort supports neighbors who might not otherwise be able to have a Thanksgiving dinner. Food is collected by area churches, schools, and banks. It is collected, sorted, and packaged in boxes and bags that have been decorated by school children. Monetary donations make it possible to purchase turkeys and hams.

This project involves dozens of community volunteers. Each year, the Thanksgiving Basket project helps more than 225 families on MDI.

Island Connections' overall goal is to continue providing free transportation, delivering food to our neighbors, and being recognized in the community as an essential resource. We focus on addressing the many needs surrounding transportation and mobility for seniors and people with disabilities living on Mount Desert Island and the surrounding islands. It is through the big hearts and generosity of our core group of volunteers that we are able to do this good and much needed work. We always need to recruit additional volunteer drivers to help us meet the needs of so many. Please consider becoming part of the Island Connections family!

The goal of our work is to bring people together, through the sharing of a meal. Whether our guests are hungry for food or hungry for community, we hope our work will continue to be a model for neighborly caring for decades to come. We believe in vibrant food systems that are relational, ecological, and accessible to all.
Since 2018, Open Table MDI has served close to 100,000 meals to our local community members.

MDI Backpack Program

The MDI Backpack Fundraiser is a nonprofit organization hosting raffles and auctions to raise the funds to put food in the hands of children facing food insecurity on MDI.

In collaboration with other area congregations and community agencies, we provide weekend nutrition to students in area schools who might otherwise go hungry. We welcome donations of specific food items and / or financial contributions.

Please contact the church office if you’d like to volunteer or make a financial or food donation.
